The invention relates to a solid, porous acidic catalyst which substantially comprises niobic acid (Nb₂O₅ x H₂O) and which consists of a plurality of irregular layers from primary crystal agglomerates, said primary crystal agglomerates having a size of less than 0.5 µm. The inventive catalyst is especially suitable for the acid-catalyzed rearrangement of hydrocarbons and therefore for example for the hydroisomerization of (higher) paraffins. The invention also relates to a method for producing said catalyst and to the use of the catalyst.
