PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which is not impaired in operability in darkness. SOLUTION: The printer is provided with a photosensor for detecting brightness, a print end detection means for detecting a printing action to detect the end of the printing action, a paper discharge tray for loading printed media after printing, a paper discharge tray lighting means being a means to light the paper discharge tray, a paper discharge tray loading detection means for detecting the presence of the printed media loaded on the paper discharge tray, and a control unit of the paper discharge tray lighting means for controlling the paper discharge tray lighting means by the output value from the photo-sensor and the detection carried out by the paper discharge tray loading detection means and the print end detection means.
