PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a hydrogenated norbornene type ring-opened polymer wherein a molecular weight distribution is narrow, a hydrogenation degree is high and a melt flow rate is well controlled in a high yield at a low cost. SOLUTION: The method comprises (A) a process of ring-opening polymerization of a composition containing a tri-cyclic or higher cyclic norbornene monomer in the presence of a tungsten type metathesis catalyst and (B) a process of hydrogenation of the resulting ring-opened polymer, wherein, in the process (A), (1) the ratio of the tungsten type metathesis catalyst to 1 mole part of the norbornene monomer composition is 0.005-0.25 mmol. eq., (2) the content of alkenyl-substituted norbornene in the norbornene monomer composition is 0.7 wt% or less, and (3) the content of cyclopentadiene in the norbornene monomer composition is 0.015-0.035 wt%.
