PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a toner having a small particle size and excellent in durability. SOLUTION: The process for preparing the toner includes steps of: (I) of melt-kneading a resin binder and a colorant; (II) coarsely crushing the resulting kneaded material to 10-1,000μm; (III) pulverizing the resulting coarsely crushed product in the presence of an external additive having an average particle size of 8-50 nm; and (IV) classifying the resulting pulverized product. The resulting toner has a volume-median particle size of 3.5-8μm, and the total amount of m kind(s) of external additive(s) in the step (III) satisfies formula (a), wherein Dt denotes a volume-median particle size of the toner; dn denotes an average particle size of the external additive n; pt denotes a true density of toner base particles; pn denotes a true density of the external additive n; Cn denotes a weight ratio of the external additive n to the coarsely crushed product; and m denotes an integer of≥1.
