A system and method of denoising a signal having a plurality of intensities. The method can includes the operations of identifying an image neighborhood from the plurality of intensities. A further operation is treating the image neighborhood as a random variable (RV) having an associated sample space and probability density function (PDF). Another operation is modifying the pixel intensities based on an information measure applied to the PDF in at least one dimension.
