The method involves supporting a thin layer of homogenous hard material e.g. glass, in a continuous manner by a bimorphous support to permit machining and polishing of the thin layer. The support has low density, high resistance to compression and flexion, and low thermal inertia. The support is constituted of a carbon foam substrate with open cells covered with a continuous composite resin binder course.
