PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a knock sensor and its manufacturing method that stabilize the output characteristics and detection sensitivity by accurately applying a predetermined preload to a piezoelectric element, eliminate short circuit failure by metal chips, and can reduce the cost by reducing the component cost and simplifying the assembling. SOLUTION: In the knock sensor 1, a component formed of an annular piezoelectric element 4, terminal plates 5 and 6, insulated sheets 7 and 8, and a weight 9 is inserted into a base 2 formed of a flange section 2a and a cylinder section 2b. A groove 16 is formed in the outer peripheral surface of the tip of the cylinder section, a stopper ring 10 for applying an axial preload to the component is inserted into the cylinder section, and the stopper ring and the cylinder section are caulked at the groove.
