PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 4-(methylthio)butane-1,2-diol in a good efficiency. SOLUTION: This method for producing 4-(methylthio)butane-1,2-diol is provided by reacting 3-butene-1,2-diol with methane thiol in the presence of an azo compound. The method is industrially advantageous, since it is possible to obtain 4-(methylthio)butane-1,2-diol under a mild condition and in relatively short time by reacting 3-butene-1,2-diol with methane thiol in the presence of the inexpensive and easily available azo compound.
