ADAPTIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEM WITH RETRACTOR HAVING PRETENSIONER

A restraint system, its retractor (20), and related method provides adaptive load limitation characteristics and pretensioning. Factors such as occupant size or crash severity may be used in controlling the system. The adaptive restraint system generally includes a retractor (20) having a pretensioner (30), and through activation of the pretensioner the level of load limitation may be changed. A clutch (760) may also be employed between the pretensioner and the retractor.
