PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new intercellular adhesion protein (protocadherin) and a polynucleotide encoding the protein.

SOLUTION: The invention relates to the new intercellular adhesion protein designated protocadherin-42 and protocadherin-43, and a polynucleotide in the form of a DNA, an RNA, a sense strand or an antisense strand encoding the proteins.
