PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet carrying device, and an image reading device, capable of achieving compactness and low cost. SOLUTION: Normal rotation drive of a drive means M1 is transmitted through a first drive transmission passage to a movable means 18a, and the movable means 18a is moved to a feed position where a sheet feed means 18 abutted on a sheet. Simultaneously, reverse rotation drive of the drive means M1 is transmitted through a second drive transmission passage to the movable means 18a, and the movable means 18a is moved to a stand-by position where the sheet feed means 18 is separated from a sheet loading part. A clutch means ECL2 is provided in the second drive transmission passage to selectively transmit reverse rotation drive of the drive means M1. The clutch means ECL2 is actuated when all the documents loaded on the sheet loading part are fed, and the movable means 18a at the feed position is moved to the stand-by position.
