A level sensor (16) detects the liquid level (6) in a dishwasher sump (5). When the liquid level is below required level, a controller (15) stops operation of a drain pump (8) that discharges liquid from the sump, and instead actuates a circulation pump (9) that recirculates part of the liquid back to the sump. An independent claim is also included for a drainage method of a dishwasher.
