[Also in Division C2] An ethynylating agent is prepared by passing acetylene into a suspension of finely-divided lithium carbide in liquid ammonia. The acetylene is preferably used in a molar ratio to the carbide of 1-1À8 : 1, so as to effect complete dissolution of the latter in the ammonia, the carbide having a particle size of below 600 microns, preferably 2-20 microns. The ammonia may be at a temperature of - 80‹ to 25‹ C. (under pressure) and may include inert diluents such as alkyl esters or ethers. The carbide may be added as a dispersion in an oily hydrocarbon. When saturated, the ammoniacal solution contains about 1À1 moles/litre of the ethynylating agent.
