Liquid .is distilled in an apparatus comprising a heated cylindrical shell 12 surrounding a condenser 27, wherein the liquid is distributed as a film on the internal surface of the shell by wiper blades 56 mounted on a cylindrical rotor body 36 which has a multiplicity of louvres 38 providing openings facing in a direction opposite-to the direction of rotation of the rotor' body, the liquid-to-bedistilled is supplied through inlet 14 and flows into distribution head 24 which-is is fixed upon the rotor body. The liquid passes through weir openings 26. and spills down the inner surface of shell 12, which is heated by jacket 18. Blades 56 are urged against the inner surfaceof shell 12 by flat springs 52 clamped to torsion bars 42, Liquid residue is withdrawn through outlet 16. A fixed, cylindrical shell, with louvres, may be disposed between the rotor and the condenser. .
