[Also in Division A2] Baling apparatus comprises four rollers 7, 7a for winding and compressing material such as fodder fed thereto by a conveyer 4, and further rollers 17 for consolidating and smoothing the resulting strand (30) of material, at least one of the compressing rollers 7, 7a being resiliently movable away from the strand, this movement causing similar movement of one of the rollers 17. As shown, two of the rollers 7, 7a are mounted at one end in self-aligning bearings 9 and at the other end in bearings (10) carried by frames 11. These frames are pivoted at 29 and biased towards each other by a spring 12. The rollers 17 are supported at one end by bearings 18 and at the other end by drive shafts. The upper pair of rollers 17 are mounted on frames 20, 21 pivoted at 29 and biased together by springs (22). A pin 28 carried by the mounting frame of roller 7a engages a plate 20a connected to one of the pivoted frames 20 so that movement of roller 7a away from the material to be baled causes the roller 17 to move similarly. Roller 7a can return, however, without affecting the position of the roller 17. Roller 7a has retractable tines 8. The rollers 7, 7a are shown as conical but may be cylindrical or with sides bulging inwardly or outwardly. The axes of the rollers may be parallel or oblique to the axis of the device.
