摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a dimension in axial direction of a valve timing control device for an internal combustion engine incorporating a hydraulic pressure switching means. SOLUTION: An advance hydraulic chamber and a retard hydraulic chamber formed between a vane 35c of a vane member 35 rotate together with a camshaft 15, and a driven sprocket 17. A rotary valve 39 is in slide-contact with respect to the vane member 35 to be relatively rotatable, and the brake plate 43 fixed to the rotary valve 39 is relatively rotated by a hysteresis brake 46, so as to selectively connect supply passages 39a, 39b of the rotary valve 39 and a drain passage 39d to the advance hydraulic chamber or a retard hydraulic chamber, through communication passages 35d, 35e of the vane member 35 to change phases of the driven sprocket 17 and the camshaft 15 and change valve timing. At this time, the rotary valve 39 only rotates around an axis L and does not move in the direction of the axis L, so as to reduce the dimension in the axis L direction of the valve timing control device including the rotary valve 39.
