PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microscope in which an illumination head can be fixed at a predetermined position, when transmission illumination observation is performed and the illumination head can be freely turned when biased emission illumination observation is performed. SOLUTION: The microscope equipped with a microscope body, an illumination light source and an arm part connecting the microscope body and the illumination light source has: an observation optical system having an optical axis in a direction perpendicular to the placing surface of a stage; an illumination rotating means which is provided at one end of the arm part and makes the illumination light source rotatable with respect to the arm part; an arm part rotating means which is provided at the other end of the arm part and makes the arm part rotatable with respect to the microscope body; a detecting means detecting the rotation state of the arm part; and an illumination rotation control means which rotates the illumination rotating means, so as to position the luminous flux of illumination light from the illumination light source to the observed part of an object to be observed and fixes the illumination rotating means at the rotated position of the illumination rotating means, based on the detection results of the detecting means.
