The invention relates to the use of magneto-impedance on a contactless position sensor and to the corresponding sensor. According to the invention, an electrical conductor ( 1 ) is produced which has a magnetically-sensitive surface ( 10 ) that is subjected to the magnetic force of a permanent magnet ( 11 ), said surface varying depending on the relative position thereof in relation to the magnet. The relative position between the magnet and the magnetically-sensitive surface is varied, thereby varying at least one physical characteristic of the conductor, and the variation in the physical characteristic(s) of the electrical conductor is noted, said variation being in correlation with the position of the magnet ( 11 ).
