PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium wherein a depth of a recessed part of a recessed and projecting pattern of a recording layer can be nondestructively rapidly checked and to provide an inspection method of the depth of the recessed part of the recessed and projecting pattern by which the depth of the recessed part of the recessed and projecting pattern of the recording layer is rapidly checked without cutting a body to be inspected. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium 10 including a substrate 12, a soft magnetic layer 14 formed on the substrate 12, the recording layer 16 formed on the soft magnetic layer 14 and divided into a large number of recording elements 16A with a prescribed recessed and projecting pattern and an intermediate magnetic layer 18 whose nucleus forming magnetic field in its thickness direction has a magnitude different from the magnitude of a nucleus forming magnetic field in the thickness direction of the recording layer 16 and which is formed between the recording layer 16 and the soft magnetic layer 14, a bottom surface 20A of the recessed part 20 of the recessed and projecting pattern is positioned in a region of the intermediate layer 18. The position of the bottom surface 20A of the recessed part 20 of the recessed and projecting pattern of the recording layer 16 is discriminated based on a measuring result of magnetic Kerr effect characteristics.
