PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron transporting material contributing e.g. to the reduction of the driving voltage of an organic EL device and the elongation of life and to provide an organic EL device produced by using the electron transporting material. SOLUTION: The invention provides a compound expressed by formula (1) and an organic EL device produced by using the compound. In the formula, G is an n-valent linking group; n is an integer of 2-4; R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom, a univalent group or a free valence linked to G; and R<SP>5</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a univalent group, provided that one of R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>is a free valence linked to G and n 3,3'-bipyridyl groups may be the same or different.
