PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effective means for performing an assay for monitoring a nucleoside analogue treatment and an assay for screening an acting agent capable of masking the effects of variation. SOLUTION: The present invention relates to viral variants exhibiting a decrease in sensitivity against specific agents and/or decrease in interactivity with immunological reagents. More particularly the present invention is directed to, hepatitis B variants exhibiting the decrease of a complete or partial resistance against the nucleoside analogue and/or the decrease in the interactivity with antibodies to the viral surface components.
