PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the retrieval speed for large quantities of data with respect to a retrieval system and method. SOLUTION: A data access server program stores parts of information which are predicted to be useful for speeding up retrieval when being cached, in logical volumes into cache areas for the logical volumes which are provided on a memory area of a data access server 5 correspondingly to respective logical volumes. Storage capacities of these cache areas are changed by characteristics of retrieval. The storage capacities of cache area are dynamically controlled as follows; the storage capacity of a cache area i for a logical volume i is increased in response to the increase in frequency of retrieval relating to this logical volume i and is reduced in response to the reduction in frequency of retrieval relating to this logical volume j, and parts highly relevant to each other, of data included in logical volumes are selectively stored in the cache areas.
