PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce halation and color saturation of an imaging device. SOLUTION: A photographic area is divided into a plurality of areas, luminance values (y) are detected for the divided areas, and a tentative exposure valueαis found from the detected luminance values (y) of the respective divided areas. A saturation limit valueδis added to the found tentative exposure valueαto find a luminance value (saturation estimated luminance valueγ) at which saturation is estimated. The found saturation estimated luminance valueγis compared with the luminance values (y) of the respective divided areas to detect the number (saturation estimated area number S) of divided areas whose luminance value (y) exceeds the saturation estimated luminance valueγ. A correction quantityεcorresponding to the detected number S of saturation estimated areas is found using a function F(S). The tentative exposure valueαis corrected with the found correction quantityεto find a final exposure valueβ. Exposure is determined on the basis of the found final exposure valueβ.
