PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic sensor which is suitable for high resolution, enables acquisition of a stable output even if a gap between a magnetic medium and the magnetic sensor varies, and has high reliability, and a magnetic encoder using the magnetic sensor. SOLUTION: A magnetoresistance effect element is used which has a resistance change characteristic satisfying a relation of H10-50<H50-90, where H10-50 represents a magnetic field required for a resistance change fromΔR×10% toΔR×50% in relation to a maximum amount of resistance changeΔR on a magnetoresistance effect curve, and H50-90 represents a magnetic field required for a resistance change fromΔR×50% toΔR×90%.
