PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous ceramic body having high porosity and macro-porous communicating pores. SOLUTION: The porous ceramic body having diverse porosity, pore diameter or pore shape is manufactured by mixing ceramic powder in a gellable water-soluble polymer aqueous solution to prepare slurry, gelating the slurry to once fixing the structure and next, freezing the gelated material to form the crystal of ice in the gel structure to form a structure to have the communicating pores, replacing water produced by the fusion of the ice and performing drying without breaking using an atmosphere control replacing type drying method and sintering the dried material. Although crack or shrinkage in drying tends to be caused conventionally when the concentration of solid portion of the slurry is <20 vol%, but even when the concentration of the solid portion in the slurry is <10 vol%, the crack or the shrinkage is suppressed to stably manufacture the porous ceramic body having 72-99% porosity and≥0.4 MPa compressive strength by this method.
