<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To insure that development of white is performed during no-voltage and that of red, blue and green is performed at an intermediate voltage without a color filter. <P>SOLUTION: A reflection color liquid crystal display device is equipped, successively from the side to be viewed by a person 20, with a polarizing plate 1 having an absorption axis 18, a retardation plate 3, a liquid crystal layer 6 and a reflection layer 8. The absorption axis 18, a first orientation 14, a second orientation 15, a first optically anisotropic axis 16 and a second optically anisotropic axis 17 are set at prescribed intersection angles θ<SB>1</SB>, θ<SB>2</SB>, θ<SB>3</SB>, and θ<SB>4</SB>. The selected ternary and higher voltage values are multiplexed and a driving voltage is applied from a driving circuit 10 to the liquid crystal layer 6.
