A chain stopper for a ship's anchor chain A comprises a tongue 1 which is carried by an eccentric shaft 2. A hand wheel 10 is in threaded engagement with the shaft 2 and may be connected for rotation with the shaft 2 by means of the engagement of conical-shaped clutch elements 17, 18, on the pulling outwards of a knob 16. The tongue 1 may then be rotated out of engagement with the chain A by rotation of the hand wheel 10. If the knob 16 is pushed in, the hand wheel 10 may be rotated on the thread 12 of the shaft 2 until it abuts a shoulder 20. A brake ring 22 carried by a disc 21 rigid with the shaft 2, is thereby drawn into engagement with a fixed disc 23.
