A compound of formula (I) as defined therein can be obtained from Antrodia camphorata and finds use in liver protection, in particular 4-hydroxy-2,3-dimethoxy-6-methyl- 5(3,7,11-trimethyl-dodeca-2,6,10-trienyl)-cyclohex-2-enone. The compound helps to alleviate liver injury and fibrosis induced by chemicals and reduces the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). By increasing the content of glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) and catalase (CAT), the said cyclohexenone reduces liver damage and oxidative pressure caused by free radicals and also enhances antioxidant ability. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds may also be prepared. |
