A backlight having a birefringence reflective polarizer is provided to be used with light having large incident angle. A backlight unit comprises a light source(14), a LGP(Light Guide Plate), and a reflective polarizer(50). The LGP has an incident face(16) toward the light source and a refractive index n LGP. The reflective polarizer is formed birefringence in optical contact with the LGP(12) including a layer having parameters of the reflective polarizer(50) selected to provide R0>0.8 for one polarization state and T90>0.8 for the orthogonal polarization state, for light of wavelength of 550 nm, for at least one reflective polarizer angle of light incidence.
