Improvements in Fluid Bearings

A fluid bearing has three or more fluid feed channels opening into a bearing gap defined between two relatively movable bearing members, said feed channels comprising slots defined between respective faces of each of two relatively immovable elements which form part of one of the bearing members; the direction of the slots being inclined so that fluid is introduced into the bearing gap in a direction counter to the direction of rotation of the other bearing member. In an embodiment a bearing comprises a member 3, Fig. 1, a tube 8, a ring 9 and an annular member 10. The elements are located in a bore 2 of a housing 1, a circlip 4 being received in an annular recess 5 formed in the housing 1 and serving to axially limit the movement of the member 3 in one direction. The members 3 and 10 are bored to receive a shaft 7 which has a thrust-ring 22 mounted thereon; a bearing gap 18 being formed between an end-face 21 of the ring 22 and endfaces 19 and 20 of the member 10 and ring 9 respectively. The member 10, Fig. 3, is provided with tangential recesses 25 which direct the flow of fluid to the bearing gap 24. In use pressurized fluid is supplied through a port 27 in the housing 1 to an annular channel 28. the fluid then passes through radial bores 29 in the tube 8 to an annular feed-channel 15. The latter supplies the bearing gap 24 via the recesses 25 and supplies the bearing gap 18 via an annular passage 17 formed between the ring 9 and the member 10.
