A jet issuing from the outlet 1 of a jet propulsion engine (e.g. a rocket engine) is deflected by a transversely injected auxiliary jet (e.g. as at 2) supplied by a compressed gas generator 3 separate from the engine, there being an outlet branch 7 leading to a variable area nozzle 8, the variation in which is controlled by a regulator (e.g. a movable plug 9) which regulates the gas pressure in the generator. The flow of compressed gas for the auxiliary jet may be controlled by a valve 5 operated by a jack 6. The nozzle plug 9 may be moved in response to the combustion chamber pressure, detected at 16 by a servovalve 14 supplying oil under pressure to a piston 11 in a cylinder 10. The servovalve 14 and piston 11 and cylinder 10 may be replaced by electrical control and a solenoid. |
