<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a boron carbide based sintered compact capable of improving toughness, its manufacturing method and a protective member. <P>SOLUTION: The boron carbide based sintered compact contains boron carbide as a main component and silicon carbide and graphite, in which an acicular silicon carbide 5 is present at the grain boundary of a main crystal particle 1 consisting of boron carbide. Since the acicular silicon carbides 5 of 500-5,000 pieces/mm<SP>2</SP>exist in an arbitrary cross-section, the main crystal particles 1 consisting of boron carbide are linked together by an anchoring effect of the acicular silicon carbide 5 to improve toughness. When a crack occurs, the development of crack is suppressed by the acicular silicon carbide 5 and the damage of a protective member is suppressed. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
