Repository system and method

A repository has a database 18 containing a number of artifacts 22 storing data and a system device model 21 defining various entities, including the artifacts 22 and properties used in the artifacts. To update a system device model 21 in database 18 an extension package 62 is passed to the repository 20. Update software 64 identifies differences introduced by the extension package 62 that are only permitted if the data in the artifacts 22 is compatible and updates the database if and only if the data and extension package are compatible.
