PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner which has a self-propelling function and provides a sense of safety since the vacuum cleaner is insensitive to a sudden malfunction not intended by a user, and is normally functioned in a cleaning work which is intended by the user. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner includes: an electric blower 2 for generating suction air; a dust collecting part 3 for collecting dust; freely rotatable travelling rollers 10 arranged in the bottom part of a cleaner body 1; a driving motor 14 for rotationally driving the travelling rollers 10; a rotation detecting means 12 for detecting the rotation of the travelling rollers 10 and outputting a rotation detecting signal according to the rotation; and a control means 20 for detecting forward movement based on the rotation detecting signal, and controlling driving time to drive the driving motor 14. The control means 20 performs control to vary the time for driving the driving motor 14 when the successive forward movement is detected, in accordance time till the re-detection of the forward movement detection.
