A hydraulic cylinder has a fatigue fuse mounted directly at an opening in the wall of the cylinder. The fuse includes a fatigue element designed to yield before the cylinder reaches its fatigue limit. The fatigue element has a fatigue limit specified to be near, but less than the fatigue limit of the cylinder wall such that tripping of the fuse gives an indication, by a pop-out plunger, that the cylinder is nearly fatigued without catastrophic failure of the cylinder. The fuse maintains pressure temporarily following yielding of the fatigue member to maintain hydraulic power for the current lift. After pressure in the cylinder has been reduced sufficiently, a valve in the fuse will open to vent the cylinder and prevent its continued use.
