PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of stably lighting a metal halide lamp having a small diameter and a long length without separation of light emitting. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device includes: a metal halide lamp 52 having an outer diameterϕof≤35 mm and a length of light emitting of≥200 mm, where rare gas, mercury and thallium halide are enclosed in an airtight light emitting tube 520 as a discharge medium, and where discharge electrodes 521 and 522 are provided at both ends of a tube axis direction of a lamp container; and a discharge lighting circuit 53 lighting the metal halide lamp supported in a range of the tube axis thereof from a horizontal state to an inclined state with 60°.
