HANDOVER APPARATUS IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND METHOD THEREOF

A handover apparatus in a wireless communication system and a method thereof are provided to make a base station have the final authority for a handover command, thereby minimizing the handover break time. A handover method of a mobile station(210a) comprises the following steps of: transmitting a handover request message to a serving base station(220a)(252a); receiving the handover command message from the serving base station(258a); making the serving base station perform a physical channel change to a target base station to which the mobile station wants to be handed over; receiving high-speed ranging resources from the target base station at the point of time when the physical channel change is completed; and performing the ranging with the target base station by using the assigned high-speed ranging resources.
