A body characterising system comprises a computing device, an optical imaging device to capture one or more images, and a scale estimator comprising an optical distance measuring device, the computing device comprising an image processor to identify the image of the user within the background of the one or more captured images, and in which the computing device is operable to estimate the scale of the image of the user from the scale estimator, and to generate data descriptive of the user's body dependent upon to the identified image of the user and the estimated scale of the identified image of the user.
