PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a "disk apparatus" to detect a malfunction or failure by self-diagnosis when a light emission detection output is issued from a light receiving element of an optical detector facing a disk while a normal disk is held normally in a rotation drive section. SOLUTION: When the light emission detection output showing that no disk is detected is issued from one of optical detectors facing the disk while the normal disk is held normally on a turntable, the disk is rotated for a fixed period in ST36 or unloaded by a certain distance in ST47. Thereafter, output from the optical detector is checked and if the light emission detection output is not changed, the optical detector is recognized to be abnormal or in a failure.
