When the driver of a vehicle having a vehicle control device selects a power-saving mode (YES at step S100), the vehicle control device inhibits the voltage step-up by a converter and limits the output torque of a motor (S116). However, when the driver requires a large torque even in the power saving mode, either the inhibition of the voltage step-up or the limitation of the output torque is canceled (S118, S122). With this, a vehicle control device equipped in a vehicle comprising a battery, a converter for stepping up/down the voltage from the battery, and a motor operated by the power from the converter can produce a torque that the driver requires while reducing wasteful power consumption.
