An amplifier is provided to control clipping by grasping an excessive input quantitatively by comparing a predetermined reference potential of a comparator with a potential difference between a positive phase input terminal and an inverse phase input terminal. An amplifier(10) includes a variable gain unit, a negative feedback amplification unit(20), and a controller. The variable gain unit regulates the amplitude of the input signal. The variable gain unit outputs the output signal. The negative feedback amplification unit includes an operational amplifier(21) for amplifying the output signal of the variable gain unit. The controller compares the electric potential difference between the positive phase input terminal and the negative phase input terminal of the operational amplifier with the reference potential. The controller controls the variable gain unit by detecting the presence of the clipping at the output signal of the negative feedback amplification unit based on the result of comparison. The controller controls the clipping.
