A method and an apparatus for transmitting and receiving a signal are provided to increase a signal transmission length by estimating a channel for a transmission channel with long delay spread and to improve data transmission rate based on a signal-to-noise ratio. Data is encoded with error correction. The error correction encoded data is mapped to data symbol(S8200). Period information to insert a first pilot symbol to a modulation frame is generated. A first modulation frame is generated so that a pilot symbol interval with the first pilot symbol and a data symbol interval with the mapped data symbol are repeated periodically in an odd carrier. A second modulation frame is generated so that the pilot symbol interval with the first pilot symbol and the data symbol interval with the mapped data symbol are repeated periodically in an even carrier. The formed first and second modulation frames are modulated in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing method. The modulated signal is transmitted(S8204).
