PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make shadows of different sizes and shapes be uniformly processed to complete a computer operation in a short time when a candidate for a focus is to be automatically discriminated from a medical image. SOLUTION: A medical image is multi-valued by a multi-valuing means to obtain the center coordinates of the shadow based on the multi-valued image and the medical image or the multi-valued image is processed on the reference of the center coordinates by various image processes to discriminate a shadow which seems to be a candidate for a focus. For instance, a radius of predetermined length is rotated making a point around the shadow center as the reference point to sample pixel values of a shadow in the medical image or the multi-valued image in order and various discrimination processes concerning whether or not the shadow seems to be a candidate for a focus are performed based on the sampled pixel values. When the sampling pixel value is a loop shape, the representative value of the loop is discriminated by comparing it to a preliminarily obtained reference value, and also discriminated based on correlation between loops.
