A MODE-LOCKED LASER

A mode-locked laser for generating laser pulses comprising an optical coupler and a first optical path, the first optical path including an optical amplifier that is arranged such that saturation of optical amplification causes amplitude modulation of light with a saturation time shorter than the pulse transition period of the mode- locked laser. The optical amplifier is arranged for recovery of amplifying properties within a time shorter than the pulse transition period. The laser further comprises a second optical path which includes an optical isolator. The first optical path has a non linear property which introduces a phase shift between component pulses which are received from the second optical path and directed into opposite directions in the first path. The laser is arranged such that mode-locked lasing is initiated by a light pulse that is amplitude modulated by the optical amplifier.
