An enzyme for use in a process for producing an optically active 1,2-diol; a gene coding for the enzyme; and a process for producing an optically active 1,2-diol utilizing these. The gene includes the 112th to the 2,184th bases in sequence number 1 and codes for an asymmetric oxidase. The asymmetric oxidase has the amino acid sequence of sequence number 5. The process, which is for producing an optically active 1,2-diol, comprises bringing the asymmetric oxidase into contact with a mixture of the two enantiomers of a 1,2-diol or with one of the enantiomers to obtain the other enantiomer.
