<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image data generating apparatus and an image data generating method for generating a reduced image with an aspect ratio different from that of an original image in spite of small computing complexity. <P>SOLUTION: The image data generating apparatus 10 including an inverse wavelet transform means 11 for applying inverse wavelet transform to a wavelet coefficient and generating a reduced image whose aspect ratio differs from that of an original image by applying the inverse wavelet transform to the wavelet coefficient of the original image, is provided with a coefficient selection means 12 for carrying out selective inverse transform to the coefficient used by the inverse wavelet transform means 11. The coefficient selection means 12 selects wavelet coefficients to which inverse wavelet transform is applied among wavelet coefficients in sub bands with the same decomposition level.
