The present invention relates to wireless communication systems and in particular to peer-to-peer communications in wireless communication systems having central instances for medium resource allocation management. A probe message is sent from a first station to a second, remote station over a direct communication link, which makes use of network medium resources allocated by a central instance, which exercises control over shared communication medium resources of a wireless local area network and allocates medium resources to stations including at least the first station assigned to the central instance. A response message is received at the first station in response to the probe message. The response message includes information about link quality, which is determined at the second, remote station on the basis of physical layer measurements at the probe message. A direct communication link is established between the first station and the second, remote station. The direct communication link makes use of network medium resources allocated by the central instance. communication parameters of the direct communication link are selected in accordance with the link quality information. Data is then transmitted from the first station to the second, remote station through the direct communication link.
