The deflection rod (01) to guide the movement of a web (02) has a number of micro-openings to form an air cushion between the web and the rod. The openings in the rod have a diameter of =500 mu m and preferably a mean diameter of 5-50 mu m and especially 10-30 mu m. The rod is of a sintered metal, and the compressed air within the rod is at a pressure of >=4 bar and especially 5-7 bar.
