[Also in Division C7] A metallized, reflective, flexible fabric comprises a base fabric 22 to which is adhered a stratified assembly comprising a sheet of synthetic resin 12 having a metal film 18, 20 bonded to each of its surfaces by a heat-reactive resin adhesive 14, 16. The resin 12 is preferably a polymeric linear terephthalate ester resin, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, but may be a polyacrylonitrile resin, a vinylidene chloride polymer or a polyamide resin. The layer 12 is coated with the heat-reactive adhesive 14, 16 which may be a polyester with isocyanate and the metal foils 18, 20, e.g. of aluminium or silver, are then deposited from vapour. The layer 20 may be thinner than the layer 18. The base fabric has applied thereto a primer, e.g. a solution of phenolic resin modified with a nitrile type rubber or a neoprene type adhesive, to which a layer 24 of adhesive, e.g. neoprene, dissolved in toluol is added. The adhesive is dried at 100-150‹ F. The base fabric with adhesive and the stratified assembly are superimposed and subjected to a pressure of 40 p.s.i. at 325‹ F. The curing of the adhesive coatings 14 and 16 may take place during this step. |
