PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a taping device for inspecting the appearance of a semiconductor product inserted into a carrier tape pocket, efficiently replacing a defective product with a good product when the defective product is found, and exhibiting a high rate of operation, and a method for controlling the device. SOLUTION: The taping device is equipped with a carrier tape driving mechanism 1 for carrying the carrier tape T and intermittently transferring this carrier tape T, and a holding mechanism 2 installed on a main table for carrying the semiconductor product onto the taping device. The taping device is also equipped with an appearance inspecting part 3 for taking the image of the appearance of the semiconductor product W stored in the pocket and detecting the product stored in the pocket and positioned in an unacceptable orientation or having an unacceptable appearance, and a discharging mechanism 4 for discharging the semiconductor product W having an unacceptable appearance from the pocket by sucking it.
